And as for the five-year guarantee, most people will get tired of their computers in about three years and they will want the latest and greatest technology. So all in all there really is no need for a five-year guarantee. It is just an extra cost and you may never even need it.

2. Ports- Only buy the ones you need. Usually for most people, the only important ones are HDMI, SD card ports and USB. If you go for more than that, they usually cost more money. You may end up paying money for ports you don't even need.

3. Don't fall for the latest and greatest items. They may seem great but they usually way overpriced. For example the older version might be up to $300 cheaper than the new version. Yes I agree the new versions are all cool, but why not stick to the older version and save money, when that's all you really need.

4. Check out the battery life. If the battery life is not all that great and the laptop is very expensive, you know that that is not a good buy. Picture the battery life is good and seems about right for the price.

5. Try to avoid additional accessories when buying an inexpensive notebook computer. Sometimes they will ask you to buy additional mouses or may be WebCam accessories. However most of the time they are not necessary. So if you want inexpensive notebook computers make sure they don't fall for these tricks and end up paying more than you should.

6. Screen Size- You don't need a enormous screen size. Usually up to 15 inches is good enough. Actually in some states, there Is an extra charge for inexpensive notebook computers that are over 15.6 inches. But if that is something you need, by all means, go ahead.

7. Stick to the basic versions. Don't fall for the icing on the cake. If there is an option between Windows home professional and Windows ultimate and the pricing is $200 apart, you should go for the Windows home professional. If you really feel like you'd need Windows ultimate, then buy it separately. Don't pay $200 extra for already installed software.

When I think about the U. S. Marines, I do not think about Generals, Harrier Jets, or Military Police. The first thing I always think about is Drill Sergeants! The reason I think of Drill Sergeants or Drill Instructors (DIs) could be the fact that when I was a kid, my father was a DI. Making sure the recruits understood the "good of the many" outweighed the "good of the few" made his success. But he started each boot camp with standard processes that have evolved over the last 200 years and have been adopted by all Drill Instructors across The Corps.

So what do U.S. Marines have in common with transforming your IT services agency to be the lean, mean, service machine everyone expects? Everything! The Drill Instructor starts with basics; basic crew cut, basic clothes, and basic training. You and your organization can start transformation of your agency or organization with basic processes and procedures that have evolved over the last four decades for the IT community-ITIL.

ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is a "library" of best practices that has been evolving and adapting to new technologies since the 70's. This library of best practices and methodologies has been created by a community of IT professionals that actually do the work, manage the environment, and overcome the business obstacles.

The purpose of ITIL is to align IT services with the agency's business objectives and provide competitive advantages for the agency or organization by using the best practices in areas such as financial management, problem management, change and configuration management, and service level management. Every Federal, State, and Local government will tell you the same thing; they want the best service at the lowest cost. What does "best service at the lowest cost" mean? We should simply say the business wants the right amount of service, at the right time, at the lowest cost possible, to meet its objectives. The IT organization should be considered as a tool for the business to reach its objective, as a lever to turn services on and off. So if the agency's business objective is to supply social services benefits to the citizens of the state at any time of day or night, then the agency should just turn their IT lever "on" for those services 24*7*366 (leap year).

How do you transform your agency to deliver the right amount of service, at the right time, at the lowest possible cost? Buzzwords like consolidate, one-stop-shop, economies-of-scale, reengineer, and centralize may be the first methods to come to mind. The Marine Drill Instructor starts on Paris Island with new recruits and standard procedures that are tested, used, documented, and refined over the years. You should do the same when transforming your organization by using proven processes the IT community has been documenting and refining for decades in the IT Infrastructure Library. You don't have to create a new "wheel"; you only have to pick the best "wheel" from the library and install it. The "wheel" you will use from ITIL has already been tested and used by hundreds of other organizations with tangible results.
Service Level Management is maintaining and improving IT service quality through a constant cycle of agreeing, monitoring, and reporting to meet customers' business objectives. Because of your evolution process, you probably range the gamut on service levels provided to your customers from 8 to 12 hours a day. Some end users may even get support 24 hours per day, weekend support, or holiday support, but most after-hours support is usually done by on-call support. This could mean that at any given time there are 100+ people being used for on-call support. Since there are no service catalogs, there may be end users trying unsuccessfully to supply citizens with services because their applications are down and they don't know who to call.

With ITIL processes in Service Level Management, poor service for end users can be eliminated. Quality of service is agreed to, based on the needs of each agency, and monitored accordingly. Because of inter-agency cooperation, there are operational agreements that cascade through other support organizations to meet the end user requirements. All of these services are measured. The process is self-correcting in that each department is accountable for their own service levels rather than being accountable for the entire service supply chain. This is helpful because nobody knows where in the chain which service was interrupted.

Problem Management seeks to get to the root cause and initiate action to remove the error. With the evolution of support in your agency, about 40% of your support organizations are on home grown systems (spending time writing and supporting applications that do not have the ITIL processes of Problem Management built into them.) There is another 40% of Incident Management applications that may have some of the processes built into them, but are not used because of resource allocations, training or many other reasons. The remaining 20% of your support teams that have the application with built-in ITIL processes and that use them can only affect small changes based on the end user where they have immediate control.

Having not only the right ITIL compliant application, but also using the ITIL processes and best practices will help fix problems faster and keep problems from happening in the first place. With ITIL processes, support organizations will understand classification, trend analysis, diagnosis, and the root cause of problems. With operational agreements in place with other support organizations, you can be proactive about deleting the problems rather than continuing to fix the problems over, and over, and over again. These processes will get to the root cause of the problems and initiate the action necessary to remove the errors.
Transformation of an organization takes time, resources, and effort. Most states and large organizations take over 18 months to move through managed growth, incident management, problem management, service level management and the rest of the ITIL processes. As you will note, there is a mixture of technology, people and process changes involved in this transformation process. You cannot use a "silver bullet" to transform your organization, nor can you use only technology and processes. ITIL transformation is a balanced approach across your support organization to bring about streamlined procedures and efficiency while eliminating waste and reducing costs.

The speed with which agencies and organizations apply information technology and optimize their IT resources is becoming more critical to their overall performance. The transformation to service management solutions and services that can be delivered by using ITIL best practices is of enormous short-term and strategic value, especially as Information Technology needs continue to expand more rapidly than IT budget allocations. ITIL will guide your IT organizations in communicating with internal constituencies, defining end user needs, providing IT services, allocating resources, optimizing service levels and managing service delivery from a financial perspective. By bringing this "bottom-line" discipline to your IT organizations and processes, the same way the U.S. Marines bring discipline with Drill Instructors, you will be transforming your organizations so that IT will remain closely aligned with the needs of the business and provide significant competitive advantages.

Contacts: Collecting, Connecting and Coordinating - Part II

Connecting with Contacts

Now that you've met a few new business professionals from last night's networking event, make sure to continue the relationship online. Here's an easy way to start. Soon after the networking event, offer to connect with them on LinkedIn and introduce yourself a 2nd time. Always be sure to remove the default LinkedIn- provided blurb and craft a short note about the conversation you had (shows you were paying attention; doesn't everyone like to get a personal note?).

It's a good strategy to ask further questions about their business, what types of clients they need to meet, etc. If your businesses or personalities really clicked, look to develop the conversation past LinkedIn and onto email and phone. If you feel the synergy is right, move on to set up a coffee chat.

Now we move on to Group 2. These are the individuals you had met for the 2nd or 3rd time. At the very least, if you feel it has the potential to develop into a beneficial connection, go ahead and email them to let them know it was great to see them again. Just a short touch to keep you in their minds. By now, with the people you've met and conversed with more than once, you'll most likely have a "feel" for their interest level in your business. Hopefully, your conversations have included an exchange of ideas about each others' business focus, and if that's the case, I would let them know that they can benefit from receiving free tips and news from you about developments in your industry.

Remember to branch out with your connections to embrace other avenues of social media. Perhaps your connections really only check in with LinkedIn here and there, but spend a lot of their time on Twitter; follow them on Twitter and send a Direct Message or two, share a link, etc. Or perhaps Facebook is more their speed, and you may want to check out their Fan page and encourage them to Like yours in turn. While on their Fan Page or Blog, post positive comments and show your support. Continuing the relationship on Social Media sites is interesting, worthwhile, and helps you learn more about them and their business.

Will this pay off? It has been proven that a smaller, true list of warm connections will go much further than a barrel of cards from strangers. You'll want to evaluate if they fit your target market (or have direct access to them). Have they demonstrated a genuine interest in your products or in helping you connect to people who do?

Follow through on this screening process and every few months, go through the people in your database. You'll know by now who to reach out to. Toss out anyone who you can't remember because you've never heard from them again. Where do all these contacts go? Find out in Part III.

Telehealth VS The Traditional Approach

With the advanced technology infiltrating nearly every aspect of life, it comes as no surprise that it is changing the way we encounter health care. Telehealth is the use of telecommunication and electronic information to engage in long distance health care. It provides many benefits to the patients, family members, and even the health care providers.

Essentially, patients can experience a visit to the doctor without actually having to leave their home with Telehealth. Learning in the Social Classroom

As we enter the age of electronic media, the possibilities for education to expand into every aspect of our lives is growing radically. Classrooms of present have become a place of bureaucracy where students have to sit and listen to a singular source of information. Students take standardized tests to assure the government that children pass a quality control standard like we are devices or machines being manufactured. Students are told to be silent, listen and learn. It is time to break into the future where knowledge is not only attained through school systems, but through one another.

Peer to peer teaching

Students can learn more efficiently through their peers. It was a practice that was used before the present school structure was created, and often time is still opted for by some teachers. Allowing students to get into small groups to discuss and share can be beneficial to both students and educators. Children may come across topics during their discussion that they may not have considered as individuals and teachers are able to focus on more specific problems. As the school system presently allows, there is one teacher to approximately thirty students. It can be a difficult number to manage, and it is often a problem that hinders some students from learning. They can be left out or dismissed, but not purposely, with twenty-nine other minds in the room, one student can be easily overlooked. In a group, all the minds in the classroom will be interactive on a variety of subjects, students will only be left out at their own choosing (you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink). With students learning from one another, they will also learn to work with each-other. This kind of stimulus can prepare them for what simple books and words cannot. Students can learn not only information, but gain the ability to use it in the world they are preparing for.

Learning past the limitations

Schools of present have the limitations of time and money. Your teacher is not available around the clock whenever you need a question answered. Electronic media has infiltrated our education system and made learning available when you want and need it. The advantages of the internet have allowed people to learn from one another. It's socially interactive and the education system needs to take advantage of it. Because the internet covers from one side of the world to the other, knowledge that would be previously difficult to obtain is now in the palm of our hands. Discussion forums and sites allow for people to gather socially to ask questions, answer questions and come up with new ideas. Here, not only do the teachers teach, but they learn too. It is a circle of learning in which everyone benefits.

Considering the relatively lower costs of education through social discussion, it may play a big factor in modifying our own present school systems. It proves to be extremely beneficial that such options allow us the accessibility to knowledge year around. Education shouldn't stop at the end of the day, or when summer time comes. Learning is our life. Comparing LCD Screen Protectors

The mass influx of flat screen televisions into the consumer marketplace over the past few years has magnified how fragile these screens truly are.

• Lip bears the weight rather than the Velcro.

Cons:
• Straps considered unsightly to some.
• Bent lip may be wider than thickness of TV.

Claims and Reality

Caveat Emptor ("Let The Buyer Beware") couldn't be more important than when it comes to selecting an LCD TV screen protector.

Fact: The vast majority of these companies are working out of their garage, and couldn't ship a rush order if their life depended on it.

"Claims" to look for and the usual reality of such claims:

Claim:
• A bent plasma or LCD screen protectors causes the TV to overheat.

Reality:

• Bent plasma or LCD screen protectors are ugly.

Reality:
• Saw cut and poorly polished edges may be "ugly" to some, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Would you rather your screen protector not fall off, or look good?

Claim:
• Our clip is a better way to hold the plastic on the TV.

Reality:
• Talk about ugly! A clip for 1/8" thick acrylic is NOT a better way.

Claim:
• Ours is made from Lexan, which is 80 times stronger than glass.

Reality:
• This may be true, but it's overkill. Acrylic is 15 times stronger than glass, which gives you more than enough protection. Also, Lexan can't be easily bent easily, so it must be a flat screen protector held on with Velcro -- which also can't be flame polished.

Claim:
• We are the world's largest producer of LCD screen protectors.

Reality:
• The defacto claim of many. Focus on quality and thickness -- this speaks for itself.

A Consumer Checklist When Purchasing A Flat Screen TV Protector:

• Google the address. If you discover it's a home address, stay away. If you can't find an address on their website, simply move on.
• Is it a U.S. business, or a foreign business with a U.S. address? You definitely want the former.
• Try e-mailing or calling them... how fast do you get a response?
• How is the flat protector held on?
• How thick is the acrylic?
• How are the edges finished?

So as you can see, with a little proper due diligence, you'll find yourself purchasing a protector that will protect you as well as your TV!

Automating tool tracking processes with RFID/RTLS can range from an RFID-enabled tool box or tool crib to an RTLS (Real-Time Location System) for tracking tooling across a manufacturing facility.

What Types of Tools Are Being Tracked?: The word "Tool" can refer to any number of indirect materials in a manufacturing environment. The company puts it this way: "Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. "Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world."

Me? I think Skype could be Microsoft's best acquisition ever made. That is if the technology is put in the right hands: small and medium sized businesses. The secret is CRM.

And I'm not just saying this because we sell Microsoft's Dynamics CRM product. I'm saying this because, when implemented the right way, any good CRM system will track all the communications between a company and anyone who comes in contact with that company. So nothing falls through the cracks. And everyone knows what's going on with customers, prospects, suppliers and partners. The clients I know who have succeeded with CRM not only realize these benefits now but are also building an asset that will significantly contribute to their future valuation.

But there's one thing missing in Microsoft's CRM application, like many of the CRM applications on the market today. And that's phone integration. Easy integration. For years my clients have asked for help making their CRM systems "talk" to their phone systems. They want a contact screen to "pop" up when someone calls into the company (or gets transferred to a sales or service rep). They want to be able to make outgoing calls immediately when clicking a contact name. They want to be able to record phone calls and link them to a person's account in the system, not only to keep an historical record of the call but also to sometimes cover their butts when people are trying to remember what was said.

For years the popular CRM vendors have claimed to do this. And it can be done. But it always involves third parties. And it takes more resources than most of my clients are willing to spend.

The perfect example of this is Peter Koso, who is Vice President of Operations at educational software maker Lexia Learning. Earlier this year, Koso undertook the replacement of his company's existing CRM system from an older version of Sage's SalesLogix to the popular cloud based application Salesforce.com. According to Koso the company had "outgrown" the older product and needed a system that could handle order processing, marketing campaigns, customer service and be open enough to integrate into their existing financial system. To accomplish this, the seventy person company found itself not only paying $125 per month per user for the Salesforce application but upwards of $50,000 in consulting fees to integrate and customize the software. And that doesn't include the time and resources spent by the company's internal project management team and employees.

This is no small investment, particularly for a relatively small company. Many of the companies I work with who are of a similar size would choke on these numbers. But Koso gets it. He understands the long term value a system like this can bring. And the management of Lexia Learning understands that making an investment in a great CRM system now will enable the company to be that much quicker and better in the years to come.

Which brings us to the phones. Koso also wanted to integrate his new CRM system with their phone system. And here is where timing is everything. Because Koso was also looking for a new phone system at the same time. Perfect! He made integration a priority.

Koso bought his new communications systems from Thinking Phone Networks, a provider of unified communications technology. As good a company as Thinking Phones is, they're operating in a very competitive environment. And let's face it: today's phone systems generally have most of the same features. But Koso found that Thinking Phones offered a few unique advantages: they used the best hardware around (Polycom phones), they operated entirely as a cloud based communications provider and...they connected to his CRM system.

"I wanted my employees to connect from anywhere, even their homes." Koso told me. "And for that I needed both my phone and CRM systems to be cloud based and integrate with each other."

And that they did. Thinking Phones' connector to Salesforce.com did two things he needed right out of the box.

For starters, all voice mails recorded by the new system were converted into.wav files and were able to be easily linked to a contact record. That way anyone in the company who wanted to hear the voice mail (particularly the ones who wanted to cover their butts) could do so just by accessing the right record in the CRM system.

More importantly, the marriage of the two systems made their calls quicker. When working within Salesforce.com, a customer support rep, for example, can click on a button next to the customer's mobile or office phone number and the call is immediately placed out of the phone system. As the call is connected, the customer support rep's phone rings. The rep can then pick up their own phone and wait for their party to answer on the other line. A huge time savings.

And a match made in heaven. Koso got his new CRM system. And he got his new phone system. And they talked to each other. Almost out of the box too. Almost.

Because there is still more to be done. Koso wants the same screen pop functionality that I mentioned earlier. And he wants the CRM system to be able to automatically populate more data from those "quick calls", like time of call, duration, even the type of call (cold call, return call) so that his reps can do even less data entry. Koso and the guys at Thinking Phones are at this moment putting these new features into place.

There are plenty of third party applications that integrate phone systems with CRM systems. Thinking Phones, for example, has a connector for Dynamics CRM too.

But is anyone from Microsoft reading this?

Can you see how fragmented this market is? For Koso to integrate his phone system to his CRM system he got lucky: he was able to replace his entire phone system with a new one that had this capability at the same time he was buying a CRM system. Most of the clients I work with don't have this luxury. And Koso had to find the right communications partner with the right application to do the job. And even that product, as good as it is, needs to be improved. And one other thing: Koso admits he's a technology guy. And an internal technology guy was essential for getting this integration to work. Not everyone I work with are fortunate enough to find good partners (like Thinking Phones) using good hardware (like Polycom's) and who have the internal where-with-all to connect their systems to their CRM software.

There are over a hundred million people using Outlook. Microsoft claims there are 22,000 customers and over 1.1 million users of its Dynamics CRM product (which is built inside of Outlook in addition to having a web interface). And it's growing. Why not make Skype integration with these two products a priority? You own the software now. Making a call from Outlook by clicking on a button? Recording the call and linking to the contact? Linking incoming calls to contact records? Incorporating Skype's video into the picture? This seems pretty easy. And the big advantage is that you can do this so your customers don't have to involve a third party middleman. And that'll make companies like Thinking Phones happier because really, do you think those guys want to be spending their own limited resources on supporting a bunch of connectors to CRM systems?

Microsoft I'm sure has its plans for Skype. And I know that tying this technology into games and mobile apps is fun for the masses. But what about the business community? What's going to keep us using Outlook over the next ten years? Why should we choose Microsoft's enterprise applications, like Dynamics CRM, over competing products like Salesforce.com?

I'll tell you why: Skype's technology, if it's part of Outlook and Dynamics CRM out of the box, will make it quicker and easier for us to communicate with our customers. And that will increase our sales. And that's what's fun for me. And my clients too. Buying Skype could be Microsoft's best acquisition ever.

Is Immersive Communication The Future Of Communication?

To many executives and other businesspeople, in-person meetings are still key to getting business done. There is just something about seeing co-workers or business partners in person that facilitates trust and comfort, or on the other hand activates people's instincts about whether the people they are working with might not be a good fit. Likewise, there is no substitute for in-person communication among friends, family members, and significant others, where a hug or a smile can communicate as much as a thirty-minute conversation.

However, given the cost of travel these days in terms of gasoline and airline tickets, and the wide dispersion of friends and family that happens as all of us try to make our own lives in a difficult economy, in-person meetings with business partners, friends, and family members are becoming harder and harder to arrange. Given these circumstances, the future of communication may lie in a phenomenon known as "immersive communication."

"Immersive communication" is related to what has been known for years as "virtual reality," but the terms are somewhat confused in current usage. According to some observers of the field, virtual reality involves the use of devices that users are meant to wear in order to project a virtual environment into their sensory organs, while "immersion" refers to projecting this environment around the viewer without requiring them to wear any devices. A prototypical example of immersive communication would therefore be the holograms that CNN used in its 2008 presidential election coverage. However, these definitions of "virtual reality" and "immersive communication" are not strictly applied in everyday use, and "immersive communication" is rapidly coming to mean any form of communications technology that engages users' senses in ways that they would normally experience during a physical, in-person conversation.

In order to build a truly immersive communication medium, designers have been hard at work studying the various elements that human beings rely on to communicate during conversations when all parties are physically present. It is not hard to imagine what these designers might be studying; just think about the differences between talking with someone over the phone or by e-mail as opposed to seeing them in person! In particular, designers are focusing their efforts on creating virtual "avatars" that will serve as people's virtual representatives during immersive communications.

These "avatars," it is hoped, will eventually be able to capture all of the subtle things that people communicate during in-person interactions. For example, people working in immersive communication technology are developing avatars that can communicate gestures and subtle facial cues that signal emotional responses. Another important feature of immersive communication is the use of stereo sound, especially when a group of avatars are communicating. The idea is that some sounds will come from behind each person, some in front, and so on, in order to better simulate the audio input of a real-life communication experience.

Video conferencing using "immersive communication" technology may be the future of the communications world considering the widespread distances these days between both personal and business contacts, and the increasing costs of closing those distances. It may not be long before we are all using our personal "avatars" to talk with friends, family, associates, and other people around the world!

This review covers one of Sennheiser's more popular aviation headsets, the Sennheiser HMEC-461.

Here is what I like about this product…

- At $730, it costs less than its competitors (Bose A20 = $1095, Lightspeed Zulu = $800)
- Superior noise reduction - Made with German quality
- You can plug your cell phone directly into the headset
- Best warranty in the industry (10 years)
- Very low clamping force

What I don't like about it…

- Clamping force is very low

Ok, let's look a bit deeper now…

Here is what you get:

- Active Noise Reduction (ANR) headset
- Bag to carry the headset and the related apparatus
- Clip to attach the wires to your clothes
- Owner's Manual
- 2.5 mm cable connectors for your cell phone and 3.5 mm jacks for playing your MP3 player

The most noticeable thing about the Sennheiser HMEC-461 is the light clamping force. At first, when you compare them with other high-end aviation headsets you immediately notice that they feel less stable on your head. The good thing is they feel very comfortable. The bad thing is they may be too comfortable, as in they feel as though they may fall off.

The type of ear pad material Sennheiser uses is also fine for short flights, but if your flights tend to be lighter than that, you will likely find they aren't as comfortable as Bose or Lightspeed's comparable products.

Here's how headset makers can suppress noise in the cockpit…

1. Passive noise protection
2. Active Noise Reduction

Sound is first blocked by the physical action of the ear cups.

Active sound reduction filters noise in a different way. First, the ANR system uses microphones to pick up noise in the cockpit. Then, it electronically matches the sound in opposite amplitude and frequency. This mirror-image of the original sound is then broadcast into the ear cup, thereby canceling the noise so you don't hear it.

What do actual users of the Sennheiser 461 have to say about the product?

- Only 2 negative comments out of a total of 33 found on the internet (that's a 94% positive rating).

The bottom line is, the Sennheiser 461 is an excellent headset but you have to check it in flight to make that determination. Almost any headset will work on a short flight of an hour or less. Where a high-end headset earns its keep is when your flights are longer.

It is wise to read the reviews on the internet and talk to other pilots before you move forward. The best thing of all to do is try several manufacturers' products under your actual flight conditions. Then, you have some field-tested data that leaves out the guesswork.

One last thing…remember - you can't regain the hearing you have already lost.

I have lost some of my hearing because of all those hours in a Cherokee 235 growing up in the 1960's flying with my dad. Very few people wore headsets in those days.

We all get busy, move on to other things, and neglect to take actions on things that aren't nipping at our heals. Hearing loss is so incredibly gradual you don't even notice it.

I wear an ANR aviation headset religiously now. There are a number of high-quality competitors for the Sennheiser HMEC-461, including the Bose A20, and the Lightspeed Zulu. If you try one and don't like it, exchange it for another until you find what you like. That is as easy to do through an online or bricks and mortar store.

There's just no way to know which one is right for you until you try several and pilot stores expect that.
